The
mission of the DDM research group is to conduct leading edge research in
data science, data mining, machine learning, deep learning, multimedia
information systems, big data analytics, semantic-based information
management/fusion/retrieval, database management systems,
multimedia networking, and security.

In support for excellence, the
DDM research group receives funding from agencies such as NSF, Naval
Research Laboratory, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,
Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, Florida Department of Insurance,
and National Park Service.

Dr. Mei-Ling Shyu
has been an Associate Chair and a Full Professor at the
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), University
of Miami (UM) since October 2013 and June 2013, respectively.
Prior to that, she was an Associate/Assistant Professor in ECE at
UM from January 2000. She received her PhD degree from the School
of Electrical and Computer Engineering and three Master degrees
in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Restaurant, Hotel,
Institutional, and Tourism Management, all from Purdue University,
West Lafayette, IN, USA.
Her research interests include
data science, data mining, machine learning, deep learning,
multimedia information systems, big data analytics, semantic-based
information management/fusion/retrieval, database management systems,
multimedia networking, and security.
She has authored and co-authored 2 books and more than 270 technical
papers published in various prestigious journals, book chapters, and
refereed conference proceedings. Dr. Shyu was awarded the
2012 Computer Society Technical Achievement Award and
the ACM 2012 Distinguished Scientists Award.
She received
the Best Paper Award from the IEEE
International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration in 2016,
the Excellence in Research Journal Award from IGI Global in 2016,
the Best Paper Award from the IEEE
International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration in 2014,
the Best Paper Award from the IEEE International
Symposium on Multimedia in 2013,
the Best Paper Award from the IEEE
International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration in 2012,
Provost Research Award from UM in 2012,
the Excellence in Research Journal Award from IGI Global in 2011,
the Best Student Paper Award with her student from the
Third IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing in 2009,
the Johnson A. Edosomwan Scholarly Productivity Award
from the College of Engineering at UM in
2007, and the Excellence in the Research and Application of Advanced
Computing and Internet Technologies to Further NOAA's Service to the
Nation Metadata Management Award from NOAA TECH 2004.
She serves/served
as an Associate Editor for several journals including IEEE Transactions
on Services Computing, IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems,
IEEE Transactions on SMC-Part C: Applications and Reviews, etc. and
on the editorial board of many other journals. Dr. Shyu
has been a guest editor of many journal special issues, a program
chair/vice chair of more than 45 IEEE and ACM international conferences,
symposiums, and workshops, and a member of organizing committees and
technical program committees for more than 200 international meetings.
She is the Chair of IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on
Multimedia Computing (TCMC), a member of the IEEE SMC Society Technical
Committee on Knowledge Acquisition in Intelligent Systems, and
a Steering Committee member (representing Computer Society) of the
IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo. She was in the
steering committee of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (representing
Computer Society).
She is a Fellow of IEEE, AAAS, and SIRI.
